Three birds on a branch on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo shows three small birds perched side by side on a thin branch, with a leaf sprig on the left and a curled scroll with a few dots beneath. The linework is fine and even, with little or no shading, and the design is a single colour. The fist is raised against a plain light background, with the tattoo centred on the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The master wanted the swallows painted before the kiln was lit, because a jar with birds on it sells to people who have never seen a swallow, and he said that was the whole trick of the trade. I was sixteen and my hand shook. I had mixed the black slip from burnt vine wood and river clay, and it went on thin as breath if I held the brush just so.

Three birds, he said. Not two, because two look like a pair waiting to be parted, and not four, because four is a crowd. I sat on the workshop step with the jar between my knees and drew the branch first, one bent line the eye would follow without thinking. Then the birds, each turned a little from the next: one preening, one looking back over the harbour wall, one with its beak open as if it had just remembered a word it meant to say.

Leaves went on the left, three strokes each, and beneath the branch I put a curl like a fern unrolling, with dots scattered where the flies had settled on the clay in summer. The master came out at dusk and turned the jar in the lamplight. He said nothing for a long time. Then he tapped the middle bird with his thick thumbnail and said that one was me, and I took it for praise until he added that it was the one who would leave first.

He was right. I sailed for Miletus the spring after with a bundle of brushes and one jar of my own making. I have made a great many jars since, and none of them had three birds, yet the ones that sell fastest are always the ones where the buyers stop at the middle bird and ask me, quietly, whether it is going somewhere.
