Black fine line script tattoo reading Fearless with a small solid heart, on the top of a bare foot resting on sand.

Fearless script with heart on foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest on sand, and the right foot carries the word Fearless in black cursive script with a small solid heart near the end of the lettering. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink reads as dark grey-black against warm skin. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with the toes and an ankle strap visible in the surrounding composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide had already swallowed the first letters by the time Maud Pengelly reached the slipway, so she read the rest of the word as the water pulled back from it. Her nephew had written it with a stick, pressing hard, the way boys do when they want a thing to last. Fearless, it said, the final s trailing towards the rocks, and beside it, because he had run out of word and still had something to say, a heart no bigger than a winkle shell.

Tobias was nine and had spent the summer climbing the breakwater at Porthgwidden against orders. His mother had gone up to Truro for a hospital appointment and left Maud a list of rules and a thermos of cold tea. Maud had found him at first light, soaked to the knees, arguing with a herring gull over a bread crust that he insisted was his.

"You wrote it for me?" she asked. He shrugged his thin shoulders. "It's not for you. It's for the sea. You have to tell it what you are before it comes in." Maud thought of the lifeboat crew who had launched into a gale the winter she was seven, her father among them, and how they had stood on this same slip with their oilskins buttoned to the throat. They had not felt brave, her father once told her. The word was just painted over the boathouse door, and a man could not very well stand under it and turn back.

She took the stick from him and crouched, wet sand cold through her skirt, and wrote a single line beneath his heart: not for the sea. For you. The next wave slid up the shingle and took it all, and Tobias laughed so hard he had to sit down. The two of them walked home with their shoes in their hands, leaving the tide to read whatever it liked.
