The keeper at Rhu Point laughed when I asked after the post. He said the mail boat only comes on Thursdays, and that a man who truly wanted to be somewhere could simply stay put. I told him I had been staying put for nine years. He handed me a stub of pencil and let me write on the whitewashed wall of the signal room, beside the names of other sailors who had been homesick. Under them I wrote what I had been trying to say since the spring: heaven is a place on earth with you, and I have been a long way from it.

I am coming back on the Thursday boat. If the tide is kind we will dock before the bells, and I will walk up the lane past the mill with my cap in my hand like a fool. Keep the kettle warm and the blue shawl on its hook. I want the sky over the harbour to look just as it did the morning I left, pale and scattered with cloud, so I know the world has not carried on without us.
