Dear Tom,

The rain has come down the valley since Tuesday and the tips have turned to mud, so Mam says you are to keep your boots by the range and not in the cold scullery. I have sent the flannel vest you left behind, the good wool socks, and a paper of cloves for your chest. Your dad will not write, you know what he is like with a pen, so I am writing for the both of you. He can add his name at the bottom if he likes.

Mrs Gwilym from number nine came round with a pie yesterday and said the new overman at Glan Ffynnon is a decent sort who listens. I told her listening never got a man out of a roof fall. She laughed, then went quiet, and we both looked at the kettle for a while.

Something else you should know. On Sunday I found a grey feather on the front step, long as my hand, with the barbs all combed flat as if someone had run a thumb down them. I kept it. It is in the biscuit tin with your grandad's brass check, the one they gave him the year he started. I sat with it a long time and thought of you going down in the cage with the lamp swinging, and I thought, that feather has come a long way to end up on my step.

Stay strong, love. Come up the same way you went down, and tell me all about the light.

Mam
