Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two photographs show a matching pair of tattoos on the top of two feet. Each design combines an infinity symbol with a shaded feather, and script lettering reading big sister on one foot and little sister on the other. The linework is thin and clean, with grey shading used on the feather, and the images are shown side by side against plain skin.

Tam stayed on the near bank with the goats until the moon was high. The guards kept lanterns on the stones and asked every child for a name and a reason. Tam had no pass and no reason, only a shoe that pinched and the knowledge that the current turned in a long figure of eight below the mill, so she waited for the loop where the water doubled back.

Nell waited on the far bank in the wet reeds. She counted the bends the way their grandfather had taught them, one loop, then another, and on the third she saw a small shape step into the shallows with its arms out for balance. Tam crossed without a lantern. The feather had dried against her ribs, and the river had not reached it.

By morning they sat on a fallen oak above the ford, and Nell pressed the feather flat on her knee. Neither spoke of the crossing. The road ahead ran into a country where nobody asked for papers, and they walked it side by side, one tall and one small, following the bend of the water until it straightened out.
