Matching big sister and little sister feather tattoos
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two side-by-side photographs show matching tattoos on feet. Each design combines a feather with an infinity loop, and the words big sister on the left and little sister on the right are written in looping script along the loop. The linework is fine and black, with light shading on the feather's barbs, and the photos are taken close up against plain skin.

Come closer, you lot, and mind the fire. This is about the Kingdom of Vell, which lay where the river bends twice, and about two sisters who shared one feather.

The elder was called Maren Hask and the younger Pim, though in the palace they were only ever the Big and the Little, because the court had no patience for names. The feather had come down from the grey heron that nested above the mill. When Pim found it, she ran the length of the mill race to show her sister. Maren took it, turned it once against the light, and said it should go to whoever walked the Long Road first, since the road was the only thing in Vell that never ended.
So the Road was a loop. It ran out from the castle gate, over the bridge, round the salt marsh and back under the same gate, forever. Pim walked it first, the feather tucked in her boot. Maren walked it second, and each time one passed the other at the bridge they stopped, traded the feather, and went on. The guards swore they never once saw them agree on who was ahead.
Years later, when the old queen died and the bells rang backwards, the sisters met at the bridge with the feather between them, and neither would take it. They tied it to the rail with a length of cord and left it there. Travellers still stop to read the words someone scratched into the stone beside it, in a hand that curled like a river. If you walk the Road in the right direction, the feather will be waiting where the two lines meet.
