Fine line black tattoo of a feather joined to an infinity symbol with script lettering on a section of bare skin.

Feather and infinity script tattoo

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo shows a feather with soft, shaded barbs on the left, joined by a looping infinity line to two words in cursive script. The linework is fine and even, with the feather shaded in grey to give it depth. The photograph is taken straight on against plain skin tones, with a dark object visible at the top right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ruth, the Bramleys are coming down faster than we can pick them, and the cart shed smells of crushed fruit and wasps. Noah has taken to sleeping out there with the dog, saying the house is too quiet without you in it, though I suspect he just likes being near the door when the lorry comes.

On Tuesday he found a jay's feather by the top gate, blue barred near the tip and grey at the base. He gave it to Toby, who kept it in his shirt pocket all afternoon and then lost it somewhere in the long grass by the wall. We walked the rows until the light went. Toby cried properly, the way he hasn't since he was small, and Noah told him a feather is only a feather. It was the kindest lie I've heard him tell all summer.

This morning, under the second tree in the old Discovery row, we found it snagged on a wire, the barbs combed straight as if someone had ironed them. Toby held it up against the sky. Noah took a length of twine from his pocket and looped it round both their wrists, going over and back, over and back, the way you showed them with the bootlaces. He said that was how it would stay, never finishing, never coming apart.

I've enclosed the feather. Keep it flat in the recipe book, at the page about apple cake. Tell Mum the boys are fine and that I'm sorry about the ladder. The twine is still knotted on Toby's wrist as I write this, going brown at the edges like the leaves.
