Dad said the train would not wait for sentiment, so Michael packed his suitcase on the kitchen table between the bread knife and the wireless, and I sat across from him pretending to read the Gazette. Hollin Bridge had one bus a day and it went the wrong way for anybody with ambitions. He was going to Sheffield to work on the cranes, and then, he said, further.

The feather was lying on the bottom of the suitcase when I went to fetch his shirts. A jay's, or a pigeon's maybe, though it had a sheen that caught the lamp like oil on a puddle, violet near the root, then blue, then a green so bright it looked wet. Someone had given it to him years back, I think, the summer the beck flooded and we sheltered under the viaduct. He had never told me who.

I didn't say anything. I put it in the pocket of my cardigan and went out to the back step where the hens were making their racket. When I came in he had gone quiet, the way he did when he was working out how much to say.

"Keep it till I write," he said. "If I don't come back for it, you'll know I went properly."

The bus took him up the hill the next morning with the suitcase strapped to the roof. The feather stayed with me. Every time the wind got under the hen house door I felt it shift against my ribs, light as a held breath, and I found I didn't mind the cold so much.
