Feather and ribbon ankle tattoo
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is shown with a tattoo of two shaded feathers hanging from a thin looped ribbon or bow that wraps around the ankle. The feathers use soft grey shading and darker quill lines, while the ribbon is drawn in fine black linework. The background is a city scene with buildings and scaffolding in a sepia-toned, vintage-style filter.

Mam kept the feathers in a biscuit tin under the stairs, grey ones pulled from the gulls that worked the fish quay, and she would not let me touch them until I could tie a knot that held in a stiff wind. I was eleven when I first managed it. She cut a spare length of blue ribbon from the sewing box and showed me how to loop it into a bow, the same bow she tied onto the bait box so the fleet could find it in fog.

The feathers were shaded from pale to slate, and she said that was how the mackerel saw them, as something drifting down through the water, a little bit of sky that had lost its way. We tied six a night through February. Dad would come in off the Hannah Rose smelling of diesel and salt, check our work with his thick thumb, and grunt approval if the quill sat straight.
The winter the Hannah Rose did not come back in, Mam went down to the slip every evening with the tin under her arm. She did not speak to anyone. She just tied feathers, one after another, and when the tin was empty she started on the ribbon, looping and pulling until it made a shape like a figure eight lying on its side.
In April a boat limped in from the north with a torn net and a skipper who would not look at anyone. The men carried him up to the chandlery. Mam walked down to the water, tied the last feather to a line, and cast it out past the breakwater. It turned over twice in the grey light and then the tide took it, and I understood that the bow was for him, not for the fish.
