Feather and rose ribcage tattoo

Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The collage shows a large tattoo on the side of a torso, featuring a dark feather with an eye-like marking, three red roses with grey-green leaves, and fine swirling linework with small dots. The feathers and leaves are shaded in black and grey, while the roses are rendered in red and pink with soft gradients. The three panels show the design from different angles, with the rose cluster sitting low on the ribs and the feather rising towards the chest.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, the roses by the wash-house have finally come on, three of them, red as the buoy paint, and I have stopped pretending I am not counting them every morning. The wind has sat in the north-east for nine days, so I know you will not be in for the weekend, and Mrs Pardoe says the Constance Rose was seen off the Dogger on Tuesday, though she says that about every boat she has ever disliked.

I found the feather on the slipway the morning after you sailed. Black as wet slate, with a pale ring near the tip that seems to open and shut when the light moves across it. I put it in the biscuit tin with the tide tables and your father's brass compass, because a thing that watches you ought to be kept close, and it has been watching me ever since, from under the lid.

Last night the rain came in sideways and spattered the window like someone flicking ink off a brush. I sat with the tin on my knees and thought about how the tide leaves its little curls in the sand and its dots of foam on the stones, and how none of it ever stays where it was put. Then I went out in my coat and cut the best of the roses, and it was still wet when I pressed it flat between the pages of the almanac.

I am sending you that petal folded inside this envelope, so mind it when you open it, the way you mind the nets. Come home on the Thursday tide if the glass holds. Bring me the feather's brother if you find one on the water, and I will keep the pair of them under the lid where they can watch each other.

Your loving wife, Nell
