Red rose with lace underbust tattoo

Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo

A large red rose with shaded petals sits centrally on the skin beneath the breast, framed by black lace-like scrollwork. Dangling black chains and small red droplets hang from the lace in a symmetrical swag. The rose uses soft red gradients against the fine black linework, and the image is a close, well-lit crop of the torso.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamplighters of Veyre had a rule that no one spoke of the glasshouse on Candle Hill, and so naturally every child in the valley had been there at least once. Old Maud Tallow kept the key on a ribbon round her neck, and when the town clock struck nine she would unlock the gate and let the lowest-born girl in to water the one thing that grew there: a single red rose the size of a cartwheel, its petals heavy as wet silk. Her granddaughter Ines had been given the job the spring her mother ran off with a tinker, and she took it the way children take anything they are told is not theirs to keep.

The rose did not like being looked at. Whenever Ines turned her back, it leaned a little closer to the lattice wall, and the black lace that climbed around it grew a finger's width further each week, threading itself through the iron frame and dropping its little chains down to the cold tiles. Each chain ended in a bead of red that Ines was forbidden to touch. On the ninth night of the thaw she touched one anyway, and it was warm, and it was wet, and the whole glasshouse hummed like a struck bell.

She ran for the gate, but the lace had already closed over it, a tidy black swag of scrollwork as neat as a bride's veil. Through the glass she saw the lamps of Veyre going out one by one, from the square to the river, as the rose drank them. In the morning the valley woke to a hush, and Maud Tallow climbed the hill with her ribbon and her key, and found the rose blooming fresh and proud, with a new droplet hanging from its lowest chain, catching the first light like a small, patient eye.
