Feather, birds and script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single feather is drawn with fine black linework and light shading, with three small birds flying above it. Thin script reading Strength, Growth and Love curves beneath the feather and loops along the forearm. The ink is black and grey on pale skin, set against a garden background with plants and a terracotta pot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the ovens were already roaring when I came in this morning, and Mr Abebe had the first trays out before the sky over the car park had gone from black to the colour of weak tea. You'll think I'm being soppy, and maybe I am. But you always said the bakery was a place where things got finished, and I've been thinking about that since you left. The dough has to rest before it can rise. You can't rush the crumb. Bread goes stale if you leave it out too long. Last week Mr Abebe chalked three words on the board by the till, Strength, Growth, Love, and said they were the only recipe he trusts. I laughed at him. He didn't laugh back.

I wanted you to know I'm still here, still getting up at half past four, still learning to fold laminated dough without tearing it. Mrs Okafor says my scoring has improved, which from her is practically a medal. The starlings have gone now and the sun is up over the flats, and the first customers are rattling the shutter.

Keep well, and come home at Christmas if you can. The good rye is saved for you.

Love, Priya
