Feather tattoo along a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with long pale nails, showing a single black feather tattoo running lengthwise along the side of one finger. The feather is drawn in fine, delicate linework with soft, sparse shading along the barbs. The background is a blurred snowy scene with warm lights, and the tattoo is the sharp focal point of the composition.

The ice came down the cut in the night, grey and thin as a lid on a pan, and by first light the Patience was locked to the towpath like a dog on a chain. My father always said a barge in frost wanted feeding, so I broke the crust with the boathook, fed the stove the last of the ash coal, and sat on the cabin step with my hands round a tin mug, watching the sky over the reed beds go the colour of weak milk.

A feather came in on the wind and settled on the ice a yard off the bow, long and dark grey, its barbs as fine as hair. Most things that blow along the cut are rubbish, a crisp packet or a scrap of sacking, but this lay still and perfect. When I crouched for it, the frost had furred its edge into tiny white teeth. I carried it below and laid it on the chart table beside the chandler's bills, and I thought a thing that had come that far to land at my feet had earned a proper look.
I cut a nib from the quill with my penknife, the way Dad taught me, and wrote to Tom in Leeds on the back of a bill. I told him the cut had frozen solid from Kettle Lock to the mill, that the swans had walked out on it like customers, and that I had a goose feather that wanted a second owner. I didn't ask him to come home. I didn't need to. When I walked the letter up to the lock-keeper's cottage, the ice let out a long groan under the hull, the sort of sound a barge makes when it is deciding whether to move. By Thursday the water had opened black beside the Patience, and we were away.
