Small birds in flight on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a woman's upper chest and shoulder, showing five small black silhouetted birds in flight, spaced loosely in a diagonal trail. The birds are drawn in simple, thin black linework with solid fills and no shading, set against plain pale skin. A vintage cameo pendant on a chain and red lipstick appear in the frame, with a dark, cluttered wall behind.

Sit closer, the stove only warms this side of the cabin. You'll want to hear about the five swallows of Oakhollow Lock, because they didn't leave the way birds ought to. Ada Fenner kept that lock for forty years, and every October she counted the swallows lined up on the lock-house wire, five of them, never four and never six. She took that for a promise and told nobody.

That autumn the flood came early and took the towpath clean away. Her brother Tom had gone down to the coal wharf at Stanmore with the *Patience* and the water was rising faster than any boat could climb. Ada stood at the gate every morning with the lantern, and every morning the five birds were still on the wire, waiting on her, the way a dog waits at a door.
On the ninth day they lifted all at once and went south-west over the water, not in a clump but spaced out loose, like stitches pulled across a page. Ada ran the bank after them with the lantern held high. At the weir she saw a grey hull nosing up through the flood, low in the water, and the birds dropped down over the river and flew low along the marker posts, one after another, until the *Patience* found the channel and came through.
Tom stepped off onto the lock beam with a sack of coal on his shoulder and a grey feather stuck in his cap. The swallows went on up into the sky and nobody on the cut has seen them since. The keepers still count five on the wire every October, though, and none of them has ever bothered to say what the sixth one was.
