Tiger head on a finger
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small tiger head is tattooed around the middle finger, with its eyes, nose and whiskers picked out in fine shading. The hand is spread on a wooden table, and the tattoo is the clear focus against the darker finger and nails. The image uses only black and grey ink, with soft tonal gradients across the fur.

The cistern froze again in the night, so you are sent down the terraces at first bell with the iron mallet, because the others have their hands wrapped in rags against the cold. Brother Anselm waits at the gate with a lantern and a face like a shut book. Below the wall the snow is printed with tracks as wide as a bowl, and you know whose they are before you see the striped flank pressing through the larches.

The tiger does not hurry. It stops at the cistern lip, lowers its great head, and works its whiskers through the thin skin of ice you have just broken. Its eyes are pale as the ash on your tongue from the morning fire. You have been taught that a monastery is a place where nothing is allowed to look back at you. You stand there with the mallet raised anyway, and it lifts its head and looks.
When the abbot hears of it he does not scold. He sends you to the scriptorium with the old lamp-black and a single brush, and tells you to paint the animal on the lintel above the gate, so the valley will know a guard is posted. Your hand shakes for three days. On the fourth you finish the whiskers, each one a single fine line of grey, and the face on the stone seems to breathe out in the cold.
That night you go down again with a bowl of warm milk, and the cistern is clear. Nothing is at the water. Only the prints remain, going back up into the larches, and beside them a second line of tracks you did not make, following close, as if someone has decided to keep watch from the other side of the wall.
