Black fine line feather tattoo joined to an infinity symbol with script lettering on the side of a finger.

Feather and infinity script on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo shows a feather with an infinity symbol, and the script word life sits inside the loop of the infinity. The linework is thin and even, with the feather rendered in fine strokes and light shading. The tattoo is shown in close view against a plain pale background, with the hand held out and the fingers spread.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the bean rows, child, and sit where the shade falls, because this is a story about a jay that would not leave my grandmother's garden alone. Every spring it came down the hedge in a flash of blue, and every spring she swept up the feathers it dropped on the path and pressed them in the family Bible, which is how we know it was a stubborn bird.

The autumn I am telling you of, she found one feather longer than the rest, grey barred with black, and she laid it on the garden wall to dry in the sun. A wind came off the marsh and lifted it over the wall into Halloran's field, where nobody was allowed to walk. She went after it anyway, boots and all, and came back with her skirt torn and a face like thunder, saying the feather had gone further than any living thing ought to go on one gust of air.

Years later, when she was lying in the front room with the window open to the lavender, she asked me to fetch the Bible. The feather was still inside, flat and brittle, and beside it a slip of paper in her careful hand: what goes out over the wall comes back by another gate, round and round like the bird's figure eight over the lawn. I did not understand it then. I took the feather out and held it to the light, and I could not have told you whether I was keeping it or letting it go.

Now hand me that kettle, and mind the step. The gate in the hedge sticks in wet weather, and the jay is already back on the wall, watching us both.
