Feather tattoos on ribs with feather drawings
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The collage shows two photographs of shaded black and grey feather tattoos on the side of the ribs, one with a soft, realistic shading style and one in a slimmer outline. The lower half has two ornate feather drawings, one with dense decorative linework and one with fine pencil-style shading. The images are arranged in a grid on a plain background with no colour ink.

Nobody else at the Palais Aurora noticed the one that came apart in the Ladies' Excelsior, a grey plume soft as cigarette ash, its barbs fanning out where she'd spun. I slipped it into my apron pocket. Dancers were always losing things to the floor. Mostly it was buttons and hairpins, once a whole kid glove, but nobody ever lost a feather that looked like that, fine as pencil, dark at the root and paler toward the tip, with a curl at the end like a question.
Mr Harker, who ran the bandstand, said a feather in a dance hall was bad luck, that it meant somebody would fly off. I told him it meant somebody had been dancing hard enough to shed. He laughed, and we didn't speak for a week.
The following Saturday I swept past midnight with the lights half down, the last waltz still ringing off the mirrors. I left the grey plume on the boards at the foot of the stage steps, where the spotlight caught it, and walked home without my apron. Let the next girl find it and decide for herself what it meant.
