Feather with running animal silhouettes
Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a feather seen diagonally, with an eye drawn near the quill and several dark silhouettes of running animals along the shaft. The linework is fine and detailed, with feathery strokes and solid black shapes that contrast against white. The composition is a single feather filling the frame on a plain white background.

Four of them, long-legged and low, all going the one way as if they had somewhere to be before the frost. Old Jacob Fenn swore they were the grey dogs his grandfather spoke of, the ones that trotted behind the drainage men out across the washes in the hard winter and never came home. It was looking at the door. Whatever ran out on the washes had seen us coming long before we saw it.
Jacob took the feather home in his coat that night. In the morning his shutter stood open and the snow outside was printed with pawmarks going out across the field, none of them coming back, and the feather lay on his sill with its shadows gone from the vane, as if they had finally caught up with what they were chasing.
