Fern frond tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tall fern frond is tattooed vertically along the forearm, with the stem running down the centre and pairs of leaflets branching out on both sides. The tattoo is built from fine black linework with grey shading inside each leaflet, giving the leaves depth. The plain pale background keeps the focus on the design, which fills most of the arm.

The night the frond came up through the drain grating on Cole Street, Mrs Pardoe had the lamp turned low and the presses still ticking in the room below us. I was twenty-two and paid by the sheet to ink plates for the Harrow and Lusk seed catalogue, which meant I knew a leaf from a leaflet better than most men who sold them.

The frond was taller than a man and dark where it came out of the cobbles, its stem as thick as a wrist. Every leaflet had a pale grey shadow inside it, as though someone had sat over each one with a fine nib for a month. Mrs Pardoe said ferns did not grow in the middle of a city. I said that was what I had thought too, and she told me to fetch the trowel.
We lifted it whole, roots the colour of wet slate, and laid it between blotting paper on the bench. By morning the plate we had cut for the catalogue would not print. Every proof came off with the leaflets doubled, a faint second frond lying over the first and sitting a shade out of true, as if it had been drawn by a hand that had only seen the picture.
Mrs Pardoe kept the first proof and framed it above the sink. Some mornings I still count the leaflets on it, forty pairs, the same as the frond on Cole Street, and each time the second set has crept a little nearer the stem.
