Small pine tree on the side ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small black pine tree is tattooed on the side of the torso, with a slender trunk and tiered, spreading branches drawn as a solid silhouette. The lines are crisp and the tree is shown in black ink on pale skin, with no shading or colour. A hand rests at the left edge of the frame, and the tattoo sits in the centre of the composition.

Now sit down, you lot, and stop fidgeting with your cider, because I am coming to the bit about Mrs Haskell's pine. You can all see it from the back step of this hall, the one the council wanted felled in 1952. It was a seedling then, no taller than a fiddle case, and Joseph Greave carried it up from the ferry landing in a coal sack because he had promised his mother a tree that would stay green when the dance floor went dark.

That first winter the boards were cold enough to crack a glass, and the band played in their coats. Every Saturday Joseph came in with needles stuck to his collar and stood by the stove, saying nothing, until Lily Ashdown asked him to dance. She told him the good thing about a pine was that it never dropped its leaves, so it never had to start again. He said that was the most foolish thing he had ever heard, and then he asked her to dance a second time, which is how the whole town knew.
They married in the spring. The pine grew the way pines do, one tier at a time, each branch spreading flat like a hand held up to stop traffic. Lily hung paper lanterns in it for the summer fair, and Joseph swore that when the wind was right he could hear the fiddles from the top branch.
So when the council came with their saws, it was Lily who stood on this step with her arms folded, and that is why you are all dancing beside a tree tonight. Now, who owes me a drink?
