Pine tree on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A tall conifer with a straight central trunk and tiered, drooping branches is tattooed on the inner forearm. The tree is rendered in solid black ink with bold outlines and textured needle strokes suggesting foliage. The plain skin and dark ground behind the arm keep the design as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last tall pine on Caddon Ridge had been standing so long that the people of the terraces had stopped asking where it came from. It rose straight out of the stony soil with a trunk as true as a plumb line, and its branches came off in tiers that drooped at their ends like the hems of old coats. They called it the Measure. Each spring the village walked up with a length of knotted cord and held it against their house walls, and whatever the cord said about the wall was the truth of that year.

Tobin Achterberg was nineteen the spring the Sorrels' roof came down in a gale, and he decided the Measure was wood enough for new rafters. The keeper, Ysolde Marr, told him the tree did not give up its timber to anyone who asked. He climbed anyway. Near the third whorl of boughs his hand slipped on the resin and he hung above the terraces with his boots kicking at nothing, while Ysolde shouted up at him that a tree which stood so straight did not fall in a hurry.

He did not fall. The branches below him sloped down like steps, and each tier took his weight when he set a foot on it, so he worked his way down one bough at a time, the way the old songs said the swallows came down to the water. When his boots reached the ground he was shaking and sticky and empty-handed, and Ysolde only looked at his hands and nodded, as if she had expected nothing else.

That autumn Tobin cut no wood at all. He gathered the fallen cones from the root, carried them down to the Sorrels' yard, and planted one beside the new wall. He left the cord coiled at the foot of the Measure, where it still lies, and every spring someone checks it against the walls, and every spring the cone the boy planted has grown a little straighter than the year before.
