Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a person's head and neck, with a small tattoo of a document icon containing a cross, above the words TATTOO.JPG. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading. The blurred background shows buildings and water in soft warm light, and the person wears a dark top with a navy collar.

The drive arrived at Hollis Data Recovery in a Co-op bag, wrapped in a tea towel that smelled of cloves, and Marisol Dunn had the decency to put on gloves before she touched it. The label, in biro, said only: PLEASE, WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T LET IT DELETE ITSELF. Her manager laughed. Marisol didn't, because she had seen what people do to their own memories when they get frightened of losing them.

Forty minutes into the scan she found the ghost. Every lost file leaves a shadow behind, a blank page with a cross in its corner, the picture a machine draws when it has lost the thing it was meant to show. This one still had its directory entry: TATTOO.JPG, zero bytes, last modified at 04:12 on a Sunday in March. Nobody saves a file called that at four in the morning unless they are trying to say something without saying it.

She ran the recovery tool through the night, the fan whining, the kettle going cold twice. Near dawn the sectors gave up fragments: a hand-drawn outline of a window, a strip of sky, the top edge of a sea wall. In the folder beside it was a text note listing what to take to a studio in Ramsgate: the window, the sea, and the word 'still' underlined twice.

She rebuilt the file by hand, the way you'd mend a torn letter. When the preview finally rendered, the cross was gone and the page was whole, a plain black line drawing of a view from a bedroom window. She saved it under a proper name and left the old one alone, because some files are better kept as they were.
