Red line drawing of a fine line arrow design with geometric diamond fletching and three small circles on the shaft, sketched on white paper.

Fine line arrow design in red ink

Fine line · Colour · Flash

A red ink drawing of an arrow with diamond-shaped fletching at the tail and a head, joined by a thin shaft with three small circles spaced along it. The linework is fine and even, with some hatching and dots within the geometric shapes. The design is shown alone on a plain white background, shot at a slight angle.

Dear Win,

You will say I am being soft, but I have pinned your red ink drawing above the sink in the cloakroom at the Palais, and the whole back room has stopped asking what it is. Mrs Okafor says it looks like something a pilot would sketch on a napkin. I told her it is an arrow, that you drew it while the band was tuning up, and she said that explained the diamonds.

The fletching is what got me. You gave it three rows of little diamonds, each one split down the middle so it looks like it has been opened, and you put dots inside them the way you do when you are thinking hard and pretending not to. The shaft has three rings strung along it, one for each Sunday you walked me home past the gasworks and did not say what you meant. I counted them twice. I still cannot decide whether that makes you a poet or a pest.

Here is the news. The manager asked if I would take the late shift on the door on Saturday, which means I will not be dancing with anyone, which means I am free to glare at the gramophone all night and keep a list of who steps on whose shoes. Bring the drawing when you come. I want to see whether you have fixed the head, because it still looks as if it might leave the page before you do.

Yours, straight as the shaft, Dot
