Three arrows on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Three arrows sit side by side on the inner upper arm, each with a feathered tail and a pointed head, all aligned in the same direction. The linework is thin and even, with the feathers drawn in fine hatched strokes and no shading or solid fills. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits in the centre of the arm against a plain, light textured background.

Dear Wren,

The snow has shut the Hollin road since Tuesday, and the inn is full of people who would rather be anywhere else. Mrs Ashdown has claimed the settle by the fire and will not give it up for the carter, the carter will not stop complaining, and I have eaten so many turnip pies that I may never look at one again.

On Wednesday a hunter came in white to the eyebrows and asked for a bed he could not pay for. Father would have turned him out. I gave him the room over the stable instead. In the morning the room was empty, the window latch lifted, and on the sill lay three arrows set side by side. Their feathers are cut so fine they look like frost ferns, and each head is filed to a point you could thread a needle with. I know Father's work when I see it, and these were not his, but the way they lay tells me the hunter wanted someone to find them.

Every arrow points the same way, towards the door and the long white road beyond it. I could have sent word after him, but the drifts are above the gate and there was no one to send. So I did the thing Father always did with a thing he could not keep. I hung them over the hearth, points to the door, where anyone who comes in out of the cold will see them first.

When the road opens, I will carry one to the crossroads and leave it on the post. Come home for that, Wren. The ledger is still short and the stable roof still leaks.

Love, Nell
