Matching arrow and infinity tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two people's forearms are shown close to the wrist, each with a matching small arrow tattoo whose shaft is threaded through an infinity symbol. The linework is thin and solid black, with no shading or colour. The arrows sit at a diagonal, with one slightly larger than the other, and a paper coffee cup is held in the upper right of the frame.

Nell had the feathers sorted by colour before the kettle boiled, goose on the left and turkey on the right, the way her father had taught her. Forty shafts for the Ashworth club were wanted by Saturday, and a note pinned to the bench said only ask Tom about the bow string.

Tom came in with rain on his shoulders and a paper cup of tea going cold in one hand. He had been down the lane to look at the target butts, flooded since Michaelmas, and he said the bank would go by spring unless somebody with a spade and a grudge did something about it. Nell told him she had no grudge and no spade, only forty arrows and a bench that wobbled. They argued about the bank the way they had argued about everything since they were children sharing a loft, and somewhere in the middle of it she found herself laughing.
Their grandfather had a saying about the loop. A shaft threaded through the eight, he said, never really stops. It only turns back on itself and comes round to the start again, which made it the one sensible thing a fletcher could sell. Nell had never believed him. She half believed him now, when Tom picked up the last shaft, sighted down it at the window and said it would do.
She fixed the nocks, tied the fletching and wrote the batch number on the paper tags. Then she pushed the forty across the bench to her brother and said, "Take them down to the field. If the bank goes, we'll dig it out together." That was harder to say than any of the arrows had been to make.
