Fine line geometric tattoo on inner forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a raised right hand, palm towards the camera, with the forearm visible below. A small tattoo of interlocking triangles or a lattice pattern sits on the inner forearm just above a thin wrist bracelet. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, against a plain pale wall.

Dear Ruth,

The triangulation stations went in on the eleventh, three hundred yards apart across the pan, each one a brass plate sunk in concrete and a cairn of white stones that the wind keeps trying to knock over. Mr Holloway says the lattice will hold better than any road survey we could have bought from the Ministry, because every triangle leans on the next. Lose one point and the whole net slackens, he says, and you find yourself wrong by a mile at the far end. I have started to dream in those shapes. Last night I walked the road to Ashgrove counting angles in my sleep.
The road itself is a grey thread through the scrub. We drive it at dawn when the heat has not yet got into the theodolite, and by noon the air shakes so that the church spire at Pell looks like it is floating. Holloway sights through the glass and calls out the bearings. I write them down in the ledger with a pencil I keep sharpened with my penknife, though my hand is steadier than my notes. Yesterday a boy from the water company rode out on a mule to ask what we were measuring. I told him the distance between two things that had never agreed on where they were.
Holloway thinks I am a fool for wanting to stay on after the season, but I have found a point on the ridge north of the last cairn that sits exactly where three lines cross. I have set a plate there myself and cut my initials small beneath the number. Nobody will ever stand on it but me and the crows. It is the only place out here I know exactly where I am.
Write soon, and tell Mother the tea arrived in good order.
Yours in triangles, Annie
