Three fine lines around a ring finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white studio photograph of a hand raised with the palm facing the camera against a dark background. Three thin, evenly spaced black lines wrap fully around the ring finger near the base. The lines are crisp and uniform, and the soft studio lighting shows the knuckles and tendons of the hand clearly.

Dask had been told the spool was worth three months of ration credit, and she only believed it because the tag said so in a hand that wasn't hers. The drum sat in the cradle at Ninth Berth, wrapped in grey filament, and every few metres a band of dull copper had been wound round it, three thin rings set close together, repeated like a stutter all the way down the cable.

The foreman, Oyelaran, didn't look up from his slate. "Those marks are splice points. Cut between the third and the fourth, never the first."
"Why three?"
"Because whoever wound it had three of something to count." He tapped the slate twice and went back to his numbers. Dask had worked the yard long enough to know that was as much as she would get, so she took her cutters and went where he had pointed.
Inside the third splice the core was not wire at all but a tight roll of paper, sealed in wax gone the colour of tea. The writing was small and careful. It listed winters, not names: the year the east lamps failed, the year the water came back, the year someone decided the yard would keep its lights burning for whoever came after. Under the last line was a single instruction. Wind your own when the work is done.
Dask coiled a length of the copper around her spindle, three turns, pressed them tight with her thumb, and set the drum back in its cradle. Across the dark, one by one, the lamps of Ninth Berth flickered on.
