A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tuesday, half past two. The night sleeper from Carlisle has gone through without stopping, and I have logged it in the book with the time beside it, the way Mr Haddow taught me before he retired to his allotment. Two lines run past this box, side by side and never once touching, and I have come to think of them as the only honest thing at the whole junction.

Mum asked on Sunday why I didn't take the post at Leeds. I told her the rails here run straight for nine miles, and a person can see what's coming. She said that wasn't an answer. She's right, of course. I stayed because the lines keep their distance, and the lamp on the signal post is the only warm thing I can reach from my chair without standing.

Tonight a fox sat at the platform edge and watched me eat my sandwich. I threw it the crust. Somewhere past the bridge a freight started its long slow pull, and the whole box hummed through the floorboards, the bell ringing, the iron singing against itself like a pair of old friends who have agreed never to meet.

At six the relief will arrive with a flask and bad news about the weather. I will hand over the book, walk down the cinder path, and count the sleepers the way I always do, one band of iron at a time, until the lines bend away towards the town and I can't see them any more. I know they're still there. That's rather the point.
