Mandala tattoo on upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A four-panel sequence shows a woman's bare back as she gathers and twists her hair into a bun. A circular mandala tattoo sits centred between the shoulder blades, with radiating symmetrical patterns and layered rings. The linework and shading are in black and grey, and the photograph is bright with a plain white background.

The brief came in pencil on the back of a seed packet: a circle, eleven feet across, and a note saying Mrs Okonedo wanted something a person could sit inside without being looked at. I had the drawing pinned to the potting shed wall by Tuesday, rings inside rings, and spent a week walking the plot with a ball of string and two garden pegs until the lawn had a centre I could kneel in.

Box is slow. You cannot hurry it, and you cannot argue with it either. I took cuttings from the old hedge behind the vicarage in March and kept them in a cold frame under sacking, misting them each morning while a blackbird on the gate told me what it thought of my methods. By June the rings had roots, and I had stopped counting the days.

On the last Saturday in June she came down the path with her late husband's trowel and asked me where the middle was. I showed her the peg. She knelt, pressed her palm flat on the warm soil as if taking its temperature, and said the circle was the only shape with no place to start. Then she planted the first box herself, at the centre, and asked me to leave her to it.

When I came back in November the outer ring was trimmed to a clean edge, and in the frost every leaf carried a bead of ice. From the gate it looked like a dropped coin, or a lens turned up to the sky, eleven feet of small bright rings going round to nowhere in particular.
