Fine line poppy on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single poppy in an outline style, with a open bloom, a curved stem and a small bud, sits on the side of the ribs. The linework is thin and mostly uniform, with light shading in the centre of the flower and a faint dotted circle behind it. The ink is black and grey on pale skin, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Peg, the ferry was late again so I walked the last mile from Ardrossan with my good shoes in my hand, which you'll say serves me right. Mrs Holt at the chapel has had the poppies sent up from the florist in Irvine, forty of them in a tin bath, and she wants them pinned on the board by Thursday. I told her I'd do the stems myself because I'm the only one who doesn't crush them.

The bud on Mr Lennox's stall had gone over, so I took the one from the back of the tray that was still shut tight, a little green knot with its hood half lifted. He said nobody buys the closed ones. I said I would, and I did, for threepence, and I've got it in my coat pocket now wrapped in the Courier so it doesn't bruise. I know it's daft. I keep meaning to put it in water and it keeps not happening.

The dotted ring you drew on the back of my hand last summer, the one you said was the sun going round, I thought about all afternoon in the church hall. Everything in that room was going round in a circle, the chairs and the teapot and the women with their hats, and the only thing that stayed put was the flower on the wall. I'll post this on Saturday with the bud still shut, so you can tell me if it opens by the time you read it.
