Fine line crystal on the side ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single elongated crystal with a pointed top and faceted sides is drawn in thin black outline. The linework is even and unshaded, with no fill or colour, and the design sits alone in the centre of the frame. The skin around it is pale and the rest of the view shows a dark top and a floral patterned skirt.

The key hung on a nail beside the meter cupboard. Nobody had moved it in forty years, by the look of the dust.

Upstairs the light was thin and yellow. Under the eaves stood a trunk of ledgers, and wrapped in a flannel shirt at the bottom was a single crystal, longer than her finger, with a point like the prow of a boat. Mrs Pargeter had told her the stones came off the cliffs below the lighthouse, that her husband used to bring them home for the windowsill. Nell held it to the grey window. Light went in at one face and came out at another, cut into thin lines that slid across the wallpaper.
She put it in her coat pocket and went down to the kitchen, where Mrs Pargeter was scraping porridge from a pan. Nell set the stone on the table between the teapot and the bread knife. The old woman looked at it for a long while without touching it. Then she pushed her spectacles up and said that the lighthouse had been dark since the war, and that the stone had been waiting for someone to notice it was still clear.
