Small interlaced knot on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of an interlaced triangular knot, similar to a triquetra, sits on the skin of a forearm. The thin, even linework forms overlapping loops with no shading, and the design is shown in a single dark ink. The plain white background and soft, even lighting keep the focus on the small motif.

The rain had found its way under the awning again, so the hemp on Ada's stall had gone soft and dark, and every hank I lifted dripped down my wrists. Saturday on Tanner Row was never a day for selling rope, but Ada said people came out in wet weather looking for something to hold on to.

She showed me the knot on a scrap of cord: three rounded points like the corners of a shield, one strand going over and under until it came back to where it began. 'Find the end,' she said. I went round twice and lost it. 'That's the trick. Nobody ever finds the end of a good knot. They just stop following it.'

A man with a cracked umbrella and a boy hanging off his coat wanted a length to tie a boat to a mooring post that had been sold out from under him. He stood dripping while I worked, my fingers slipping, the cord swelling in my hands. When I passed it over he turned it twice, frowning, searching for the loose end the way I had.

'There isn't one,' I said. Ada laughed from the back of the stall. When the man had gone and the rain eased off, the boy pressed his face to the stall and asked me to show him. I held out my wrist, the cord still wet, and tied the knot there while he watched: over, under, round, and back to where I had started, where it closed without a seam.
