Geometric fox head on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A geometric animal head, most likely a fox, is drawn in thin black lines made of angular, faceted shapes. The linework is even and fine, with no shading, and the design is shown in black ink only. It sits on the inner forearm and is photographed close up against a plain light background.

The cutter had been dead for six weeks before anyone thought to ask what the glass was for. Mara found the box under the bench in the back of the Hollis Street workshop, wrapped in a shirt that still smelled of solder, and inside it were forty-one pieces of faceted lead crystal, each one cut to the same angle as the last. She had been sent to clear the place for the landlord, nothing more, but the streetlight through the window threw the pieces into a pattern on the wall, and the pattern was an animal turning its head to listen. Somewhere past midnight a fox came up the alley behind the shop, a real one, thin and orange-grey under the sodium lamp. It stopped at the bins and looked straight at the window, as if it had been expecting her.
Mara pressed her palm flat on the cold glass and counted the pieces again. Forty-one. The fox held still. She understood then that the old man had never been making ornaments. He had been cutting a map of the one animal in the city nobody could catch, and he had left her the last angle, the one that closed the outline and let it run.
