Triangle prism with light beam on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A small outlined triangle sits on the upper arm, with a thin black line entering from the left and a faint rainbow band exiting to the right. The linework is fine and even, with a small section of soft grey shading inside the triangle and pale pastel stripes in the beam. The composition is centred on the tattoo against bare skin, with a patterned sleeve and a red wall in the background.

The sale was on Thursday, and by Tuesday the kitchen at Hollins Farm was already half empty. Your gran's sideboard had gone to a man from Kendal who paid in cash and never looked at the lambing calendar on the back door. Only the glass prism was left, hanging on a length of green cotton in the south window, where it had hung since before your mother was born.

At half past three the winter sun dropped low over the top field and came straight through the glass. You stood on the flagstones in your socks and held the prism up, and the light split into a thin pale band that slid across the range rail, the tea towels, the dented kettle. It landed on the whitewash by the door and stayed there, a few inches of colour as steady as anything on the farm had ever been.
Your father used to say the prism was a waste of a good window. Gran said the window was for looking through and the glass was for showing you what the window was doing. You never worked out which of them was right. You wrapped the prism in yesterday's local paper, then stopped, because the margin had her handwriting on it: a lambing date, a tally of ewes, and one word underlined twice. Keep.
You unwrapped it again. The sun had moved on and the band on the wall had gone, but you hung the prism back on its cotton, pulled the string tight and left it turning in the draught from the door. Let the auctioneer ask what he likes. The light will still find that window in January, and the kitchen will still be here to catch it.
