Fine line dot, loops and spiral on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single vertical design of thin black linework runs down the inner forearm near the wrist. It starts with a small dot, continues as a straight line, then passes through a zigzag section, stacked loops and a curled spiral at the base. The image is a close, straight-on photo against a plain skin background, with the hand visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The caretaker of Hollin Court kept a ball of grey string in the boiler room, and nobody on the nineteen floors knew why. When the lifts broke, which was most Tuesdays, people came down the stairs with their shopping bags, and the string came with them in the caretaker's apron pocket, unwound a little at a time.

There was a boy called Tomasz Ellery who lived on the top floor with his mother and a window that looked at nothing but gulls. He asked the caretaker what the string was for. The old man said it was for tying the building to the ground, so the wind off the estate could not lift it like a kite. He said every knot in it was a promise someone had made to stay.

Each winter the caretaker climbed the stairs and tied one more loop, counting the landings as he went. The zigzag was the stairwell, with its lights that blinked on and off. When the boy grew up and moved away to a city with no towers, he took a length of the spool in his coat pocket, and that spring the building leaned a little to the east.

Years later the lifts were mended and nobody remembered the string. But at the foot of the block, under the bins, a coil of grey thread still lay wound tight at the bottom, and on the top floor, when the wind came off the water, the windows stayed exactly where they were.
