Black swirl ornament on the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black tattoo of flowing ornamental swirls, curls and small dots sits on the top of a foot. The linework is thin, even and uniform, with no shading, and the design is asymmetrical, with the curls spiralling outward from a central form. The photograph is taken at an angle against a pale tiled floor, and the ink is crisp against the skin.

Ada Lockyer had mended nets at Scarrow Quay for forty-one years, and she could tell a boat's mood by how its cork floats sat on the slip. The Gull Mary had ridden low since Tuesday, and her skipper, Tom Farrant, would not say why. He kept his hands in his oilskin pockets and watched the water as if it owed him money.

On Thursday she found the reason tangled in a net bag, caught between two lengths of mesh that had never once snagged. There was a brass ring, a length of tarred rope knotted in the old way, and a scrap of sea-bleached wood carved with curling scrolls, the same spray-shaped flourish her husband had cut into every bow he ever built. Somebody had been fishing for more than cod.

She carried it up the hill to the chapel hall, where the older men played dominoes, and laid it on the table between the tiles. Nobody spoke. Then Farrant's father, who had not said a word since the breakwater was rebuilt, reached over and turned the ring with one finger. "The tide knots what it wants back," he said. "Always has."

Ada took the ring home and stitched the scroll pattern into the hem of her apron. On Friday the Gull Mary went out past the light, and Ada stood on the wall until the sea was flat as a plate and the boat was only a pinprick. When she came in on Sunday, low in the water with silver, someone had painted fresh white curls along her bow, and Farrant was up a ladder with a brush, humming.
