Mags had the net across her knees before the boats were even past the breakwater, and Dilys was already late with the twine. The shed smelled of tar and wet rope. Through the open door the harbour was pewter under a low sky, and the Morwen Rose was nosing out past the lighthouse with her engine coughing.

"You'll have it knotted wrong again," Dilys said, sitting down on the upturned crate beside her. She didn't reach for the needle. She reached for Mags's hand instead, turned it over, and pressed her thumb into the palm where the twine had worn a groove. Her own nails were chipped black from the varnish they'd used on the hull, and she had never bothered to scrape them clean.

Mags let her. Forty years of knots had taught her hands to take their own shape, and they did not always know how to be still. Dilys's fingers slid between hers and folded down, one over the other, until neither could be tugged free without the other following. "There," Dilys said. "Now you can't go anywhere without me."

The boats came home at dusk, all but the Rose. Mags worked the net until her knuckles ached, then walked to the end of the wall with the lamp, and when the light finally swung round the point she lifted her free hand and did not put it down until the boat was tied up and Dilys was walking towards her along the quay.
