Peacock feather tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with the fingers curled inward shows a peacock feather tattoo running along the side of one finger, with the eye of the feather near the knuckle and the plume extending towards the fingertip. The linework is fine and the feather is shaded in grey tones, giving it soft depth. The tattoo is in black and grey, and the composition is a close crop with the hand filling most of the frame.

The queen of Harrowmere had lost her eyes in a bargain with the marsh witch, and so she sent her steward to the far orchards each autumn to collect what the peacocks dropped. Oswin had walked the hedgerows of three counties for her, and his boots had worn through twice before he thought to ask why a woman who could not see wanted so many feathers.

The answer came in the spring, when he was sent to the kitchen garden to fetch a single plume and found the cook's girl, Ilse, sitting on the step with her fingers folded tight around one. She had pressed the quill against her knuckle so that the eye sat over the joint like a lantern lit from inside. "It's the only thing in the castle that looks back at you," she said, and would not let him take it.
He did not report her. Instead he began leaving feathers on the step each morning, bright ones with the green eyes still whole, and each morning she tucked one along her finger and went back to peeling turnips. By midsummer her hands were nothing but feathers and turnip juice.
The queen's sight came back in the harvest month, though nobody told her the witch had asked for a cook's apprentice in return. Oswin found Ilse's bench empty and a single grey plume laid across the threshold, its eye turned towards the castle gate, watching the road she had taken.
