Fine line feather with scattered marks on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a single feather drawn in fine black linework, with soft shading along the vane to suggest its curve and texture. A loose trail of small star-like marks rises diagonally from the tip of the feather toward the top of the frame. The design is set on pale skin against a plain white background, with the foot visible at the lower edge.

Sit closer, you lot, the back benches can have the cold. You want the Halloway Brothers? Don't. You want the last feather of the Silver Wren, and that's a different tale entirely.

The Silver Wren was a flying act out of Norwich in the year the big tent finally sagged under the rain. Her name was Ada Quill, and she went up the rope every night without a net, because the net had been sold to pay for coal. Her father kept the ledger in a tin under the ring. Every evening he wrote down what the crowd had left behind, and every evening the sum came out smaller.

On the last night of the season, the wind got under the canvas and the lamps went out one by one, and Ada climbed anyway. Halfway across she felt something lift off her wrist, a grey feather that had been tucked in her sleeve since her mother's funeral. It drifted down past the ring, past the sawdust, and out through the gap in the flap. The old men in the front row swore afterwards that a trail of sparks went up behind it, little hard points of light climbing toward the top of the sky like someone sowing stars.

Ada came down safe. The tent came down the week after. And the feather? Some say it's still falling, slow as a promise, and you can see it if you stand on the cold ground with your face to the dark. Mind your step on the way home. Mind it.
