The letter arrived at Hollin Cottage in the third week of March, folded around a single daisy so flattened it had gone the colour of weak tea. Ada read the note standing up, in the cold hall, with her boots still on. Her uncle Tobias had never once written to her in ink. He wrote in pencil on the backs of seed packets, and this was pencil too, pressed hard enough to tear the paper in one place.

"Keep the bud on the stem," it said. "Your grandmother always said a flower cut too early is only half a promise."

She understood it at once, the way she used to understand his instructions in the glasshouse, half a sentence and a nod. The stem had been the difficult part. Tobias had kept his stems long and thin, bent over the edge of the potting bench, so that each bloom sat above everything else like a question. He had never explained the buds, only tucked them low along the stalk where a thumb could find them.

She walked the length of the lane to the churchyard before the light went. Someone had planted daisies in the long grass beside his grave, the small white kind that come up without being asked. She knelt, pulled one with its stem intact, and found the bud already swollen underneath, waiting for a warmer week.
