Single flower with long stem on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single flower head with spiky, open petals sits near the top of a long, thin stem that runs down towards the ankle, with a small closed bud along the stem. The linework is delicate and mostly uniform in weight, with light shading inside the petals. The tattoo is in black ink only, shown in a casual seated photo against a grey floor and a wooden chair.

You find the last flower of the season at the back of the allotment, behind the water butt where Ted Marrable never let anyone weed. Its head has gone spiky and open, the petals curling back as if something startled it, and the stem runs down the row longer than you expected, thin as a bootlace. You walk it with your fingers until you find where it gives up.

Your sister says the florist will laugh. Nobody pins a weed to a suit on a wedding morning. But the groom asked for it, standing at the gate with his hands in his pockets, and he asked you because you were the one who knelt by his father's beds every Sunday after the funeral, pulling bindweed out of the rhubarb and talking to nobody in particular. He said his dad called these clockfaces, and that a child could blow them bare in one breath.
You cut it above the first leaf and leave the bud on. In the vestry the stem is too long for his lapel, so you bend it once, gently, into a question mark, and wrap the cut end in wet cotton wool and foil. The bud stays shut through the vows, through the hymns, through the photographs on the steps.
At the reception he is the last to dance, and when the music slows you see it has opened in the warm room. One pale head sits against his dark jacket, its petals loosened like a dropped umbrella, and when he turns, a few seeds lift off into the light and drift towards the open doors.
