Fine line flower with long stem on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small flower head drawn in loose black linework sits on the outer lower leg, with a long, thin stem running down towards the ankle. The petals are shaded with sparse strokes and no colour is used. The plain light skin and white sneakers in the frame keep the focus on the tattoo.

The wind off the headland had been trying all morning to take the seed head from the wall, and Nell Trevarthen had been trying to stop it. She pinned the flower under her thumb while her brother fumbled the bucket of lamp oil up the spiral stair, and neither of them mentioned the letter in her apron pocket.

The light at Gull Stack had been dark since the autumn gales cracked the lantern glass. Her father used to say a light only mattered to whoever could see it, and these days the only watchers were ferrymen and gulls. The board's man wanted the tower repainted before the spring inspection, and the wages had been stopped for six weeks. Nell counted the steps in her head as she climbed, a hundred and twelve to the gallery, the way the old women at chapel counted their beads.

On the gallery she finally drew the letter out. It came from a seed merchant in Penzance, offering to buy the family's stock of wild chicory and dandelion roots that grew in the lee of the rocks. She had dug them up herself all summer, tying the thin stems with string so the seed heads would not scatter before they were ripe.

She let the wind have the flower. It lifted off her thumb and tumbled its pale fluff out over the grey water, and for a moment the tower seemed to lean after it. Nell wrote her reply on the back of the envelope with the pencil stub from her pocket: Yes. Send the cart Thursday. Then she went back down the hundred and twelve steps to light the lamp for the gulls.
