Two matching black linework tattoos of nested squares spiralling inward, one on each forearm, with dot accents at the corners.

Spiral squares on both forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown with palms turned upwards against a dark background. Each forearm carries a black geometric tattoo of nested squares that twist into a spiral, with small solid dots marking the corners. The left design is larger and sits more centrally on the forearm, while the right is smaller and offset, and both are in fine black lines with no colour.

The plotting frame had been left in the back of the caravan since the Harvest Fair at Ludlow, and Ada Quill found it on the Tuesday she was meant to be packing. Four squares, each one smaller than the last, pinned to a sheet of tracing paper by brass nails that her father had filed himself. He had always said a spiral was only a square that had forgotten where it started. She had laughed at that once. She did not laugh now, with the wind rattling the canvas and the grey river pulling at the moorings below the town wall.

The fair was moving on in the morning. The Ferris wheel had gone down to bolts and crates. Her father's fortune booth sat empty, its curtain drawn, and the man from the council wanted the field cleared by noon. Ada unpinned the paper with care, turned it to the lamp, and traced each corner with the nib of a pen. Every corner was a dot. Every dot was a place her father had stood, or a town he had mapped, or a debt he had walked off from. She counted eleven of them before the ink ran out.

She went outside at first light and paced the field with the sheet folded in her coat. At the centre, where the squares finally closed, she stopped and looked down. The grass was flattened in a rough spiral, the same shape the crowds had worn walking to the rides all summer. She knelt and pressed her palm to the ground until she felt the cold coming through. Then she stood, folded the paper smaller, and went to hitch the horse.
