The signalman at Little Mardle had a wife who could not sit still, so each evening she walked the platform with a basket of crumbs on her arm. She fed the sparrows and the stray dogs. When the last train went through at nine, she stood where the rails ran out into the dark and counted the lamps along the line until she had counted them all.

One night a stranger stepped down from the stopping train with no ticket and a bundle of stems wrapped in oilcloth. He said the flowers would only open in water from the canal beneath the old bridge. She told him the canal had been dry since the cutting was filled in. He unwrapped the bundle anyway. The petals were the colour of wet slate, and the dots of pollen on them looked like pinpricks in paper.

She took him into the waiting room, where the stove ticked and the bench had been worn pale by a hundred years of coats. Together they filled a tin bucket from the gutter rain and set the stems in it. By morning the flowers had opened, small blooms tumbling from the top like a crown of loose thread, and the signalman came in to find his wife asleep in the chair with her hand resting on the rim.

The stranger was gone on the early train, and nobody at Little Mardle ever saw him again. But that spring a lotus pushed up through a crack in the platform beside the water tank, and after that the signalman's wife never waited for a train without a bucket at her feet.
