Small script lettering on the side of a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A woman wearing grey pointed heels with a braided ankle strap, and white trousers, is shown from the side. A small black script tattoo runs along the side of the foot, with a word on its lower line that appears to read toujours, and the upper lines are too small to read clearly. The soft, neutral background and white trousers keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Ruth, I nearly didn't go to the reunion. Then on Tuesday I found our old French exercise book at the bottom of a box in the loft, Madame Lavelle's red ink running down every page like a fever chart. Every mistake got the same punishment: write the word toujours ten times in the margin. Always, always, always. She swore the subjunctive would never forgive us, and she was right about that, if nothing else.

You and I sat by the radiator in the back row and passed notes in the margins of those punishments. I still have one in a shoebox under my bed. It says Pas de bêtises, Jen, followed by a drawing of Ray Pendle eating a piece of chalk. I laughed so hard at it on Tuesday that I had to sit on the stairs.

The Crown in Ludlow had put up a paper banner that had lost its T, so it read OUR SCHOOL REUNION ORMS. Ray was there, a vicar now, and he asked after you before he asked after anyone else. I told him you were still sending postcards from places with better weather. Nobody mentioned Madame Lavelle until the raffle, when someone won a bottle of Bordeaux and said it was the only thing she ever gave us for free.

I wore the grey heels with the plaited straps, which was a mistake on the gravel of the car park, and I went home with one shoe in my hand and the other on, laughing at myself the whole way down the lane. Come up in May. Bring the shoebox, and we will finish the notes we started in 1987. Toujours, Jen.
