Fine line black outline tattoo of a ringed planet, resembling Saturn, on the inner wrist of a raised hand with coral nail polish.

Small Saturn outline on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand with coral painted nails is shown against a plain pale wall. A small single-line outline of a ringed planet sits on the inner wrist, with the ring drawn as two thin ellipses crossing the sphere. The linework is thin and even, in black ink, with no shading or colour, and the tattoo is placed low and centred on the frame.

They walked the far rows, where the Discovery trees hung heavy and the grass was combed flat by a week of rain. Tom set the tripod between two trunks, the brass tube cold with night air, and told her to look for the pale star that didn't twinkle. She found it low over the hedge, steady as a nail head, and then she saw what he meant: a thin double hoop slanted across the planet like a ring rolled round a spun plate.

"Describe it," he said, so she did, slowly, the way he had taught her to describe a tree before she picked from it. The gap in the rings. The colour of the globe, the colour of old cream. He nodded at each part as if ticking names off a list. When she ran out of words he asked her to draw it, so she sat on the upturned crate and pressed a biro into the back of a seed packet, two ellipses crossing a circle, her hand not quite steady.

He ran his thumb over the paper in the dark, following lines he could no longer see. "Thinner than I thought," he said. "Stops it looking like a hat." Then he folded the packet into his coat pocket and they walked back down the rows toward the lamp in the kitchen window, the ground soft underfoot with fruit nobody would pick.
