Fine line rose on a torso in a white bikini
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a torso wearing a white bikini top pushed up and a white bottom, with skin looking wet. A fine line rose with a long stem sits centrally on the chest, drawn in thin black linework with no shading. A dark, densely shaded botanical sleeve is visible on the upper arm at the top left, with script on the ribs and a further script line near the hip.

Skipper said the lines were fouled again, and he said it looking at me, which was how I knew it was my knot. Nine fathoms down, the pots should have been sitting where I'd left them on Tuesday, but the buoy that marked them was nowhere, just grey water and a gull perched on nothing.

My gran kept a rope book in the wheelhouse, a ledger where she'd sketched every stretch of ground the fleet worked, bearings and depths in pencil. She drew roses in the corners, long-stemmed things with a single thorn like a fish hook. She swore a rose would tell you which way the tide ran if you followed the stem. I thought she was daft. I looked anyway.
So I followed it. The rose in the margin pointed south-east off the Carr, where the ground drops away, and the pencil line from its root ran along the ridge the pots were meant to sit on. Tom swore at me the whole time. I hauled hand over hand on the spare warp, salt stinging the cut on my palm, until the buoy broke the surface by the gunwale as if it had been waiting for someone to notice.
Back at the quay that night I wrote the bearing under her rose, then the depth and the date in my own hand. Tom read it over my shoulder and said nothing, which from him is praise. The stem was still there in the margin, thin and straight, running down the page toward the next blank line.
