The seal on the lorry has already been cut when you reach the back doors, which means someone got to the cargo before you did, and the driver keeps checking his watch as if it might tell him whose fault that was. You climb up between pallets of potted olive trees and find a cardboard tray of sprigs wrapped in damp newspaper. Bay, rue, and a thin fern with leaves like worn coins. The nurseryman, Anselm Dray, swears they are cuttings for a garden in Ravensholt and nothing more. You count the leaves on each stem because a leaf is hard to hide and easy to count. Forty-two, forty-two, forty-one.

The declaration form wants every item of plant material listed by name. You have a biro with a chewed cap and one rule you have never broken: if a thing is alive, it is a question for the plant health people, not a reason to hold a man on a Tuesday afternoon. You write the names in block capitals, stamp the sheet twice, and watch Dray's shoulders drop as though someone has taken a crate off them.
He thanks you three times on the way down the ramp. Then he lifts his wrist, the gold watch catching the strip light, and tells you the cuttings must be in the ground by four or they will not take. You look at your own watch. Three forty. You tell him to drive.
