He did not shout. Brothers who shout are easy to forgive. He simply read the words I had copied beneath the flower, the verse about the field that flourishes and is gone by morning, and asked whose hand that was. I told him it was mine, which was the truth, though the verse had come from a letter Sister Mildred sent across the mere before the sickness took her. In eleven years I had never copied a thing that was not asked for.

We scraped the lily away together that afternoon, Oswin holding the pumice while I worked the blade. What remained was a faint ghost of stem, grey against the cream, the kind of mark a careful eye could still find if it knew where to look. Oswin said the ghost made a better decoration, and I did not argue. Years later I sat in the infirmary library and saw that same psalter open under a lamp, the margin bare, and understood he had kept the stem for me.
