Fine line script on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with wavy blonde hair in a fitted yellow backless dress is photographed from behind, holding a dark clutch. A small black script tattoo sits on her upper arm, with thin single-line lettering that is too small to read clearly. The tattoo is in black ink, and the composition is dominated by the yellow dress and a plain grey wall.

Dear Mr Halloran,
Keep reading
I have finished the ledger you asked for, all four hundred and twelve pages of it, and I am sending it back by the Thursday carrier rather than trust the wire with it. You will notice I have written the figures small. Mother says a clerk who writes large is a clerk who is paid by the line, and I have never once been paid by the line, so I have taken to a hand so fine that Mrs Pryce needed her spectacles and a lamp to read the shipping column.
Thank you for the nib. The steel one from Sheffield made every stroke a little thinner, and by the third week I could fit a whole sentence along the edge of a receipt without crowding the ink. I used it to copy out the names from the Ardmore wreck, every one of them, because the Gazette had printed two of them wrong and their mothers had written to the office in tears. Nobody asked me to do it. I thought you would not mind.
The bookbinder's boy says the ledger will go to the warehouse at Dock Street, where the damp gets into everything, so I have put a line at the foot of the last page in the very smallest hand I own. It is no use to anyone. It is not a figure and it is not a name. It says only that the columns were checked twice, that the lamp was lit until past midnight, and that the lamp was mine.
If you ever have it open on a bad day and want to know who kept the sums straight, you will need a glass to find me. I have put my initials at the end of it, and I have taken care to make them look like a flourish, so that nobody else will think to look twice.
Yours respectfully, Eliza Vane
